ROMAIN AZZARO
Thrilled to kick off the 2025 Digital Sound Residency with Fusion by Berlin-based Franco-Italian musician, composer, and producer Romain Azzaro. Fluctuating between harmony and dissonance, the piece channels the kaleidoscopic textures of broken glass through the vocals of French multi-disciplinary artist Jeanne Briand, creating a multilayered sonic landscape that feels dense, inflexible, and unbroken in its continuity.
Romain Azzaro, raised between France and Italy, is a multi-instrumentalist with a classical piano background from the Conservatory of Paris. He began his music career in punk, coldwave, and psychedelic bands before launching his solo project, Rouge Mécanique, in 2010. Over the years, he has released multiple EPs and albums, blending electronic textures with his vocals and guitar. Azzaro’s cinematic music has led him to score soundtracks for films, collaborate with Karl Lagerfeld on a Chanel campaign, and contribute to immersive art installations. His 2021 album Colours of Now explores jazz, ambient, classical, and experimental sounds, showcasing his versatility as a producer.
Gear(s), his second collaboration and LP with artist Jeanne Briand, follows their 2016 debut A Gamete Glass Tale. On this album, the duo explores the mechanical properties of glass, manipulating its raw sounds to create distorted, psychedelic electronic textures. Azzaro’s production and Briand’s voice form a unique sonic landscape that evolves throughout the album. A key highlight was the performance of Fusion during the Monom Berlin launch event, a 4D sound event space where Azzaro spent two weeks in the studio breaking glass to capture its raw sound. This raw material was then transformed into an experimental live show, amplified through the venue’s advanced sound system for a fully immersive experience. This performance marked a pivotal moment in the release of Gear(s), showcasing the duo’s innovative approach to sound.
